As we continue on in Zen practice we may feel a call to express this in some way that reflects our intention to go further and deeper into Zen study, at HazyMoon there are two ways we do this; Shoken and Jukai.
Shoken - entering the student teacher relationship
Shoken is formally requesting from a Zen teacher to accept you as their student, essentially you are committing to working with a particular teacher and they are committing to work with you and support your Zen practice.
This short ceremony is undertaken in private during Daisan (interview). It is an important commitment. Shoken needs to be requested from the teacher they won't raise it first however if you want to know more please speak to Scott Sensei regarding it. Traditionally Shoken is requested three times from the teacher.

Jukai
Jukai is a ceremony where students publicly acknowledge their willingness and commitment to the Buddhist Bodhisattva path and practice. During the ceremony the student receives the 16 Bodhisattva Precepts which include taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha.
Dogen Zenji described the precepts as the "single most important matter of the Zen school". Jukai needs to be requested from the teacher. If you would like more information about Jukai speak to Scott Sensei.
